Bio based materials
What are bio resins
Bio-resins use “new” CO2 reducing green house gas emissions
Oil-based resin
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) was removed from the atmosphere and captured in fossil fuels millions of years ago. When oil-based resins decompose or are burnt, they release CO2 and increase global warming.
Plant-based resin
Renewable bio-mass plants are used to synthesize resins. These use recently absorbed CO2, so when they decompose or are burnt, they do not increase net CO2 in the atmosphere, preventing global warming.
Bio-resin uses plant derived chemicals, over oil, not bio-degradable
Responsible bio with no negative impact on other sustainability metrics
No change to performance
Gurit Bio resins significantly reduce global warming
Gurit uses Lifecycle Analysis (LCA) to calculate the environmental impact of chemicals, manufacture, waste and logistics of products.
Global Warming Potential (GWP) is a common measure of CO2 impact. Gurit BIO resins reduce CO2 footprint.
Important to consider other sustainability impacts such as:
- Supply chain emissions
- Waste and energy use during manufacture
- Impact on human health
- Ensure that bio-resin crops have a positive impact on growers and communities
Bio-based products – a differentiation
Bio:
Products synthesized from biomass (plants) rather than oil. Resulting in a lower carbon footprint. Bio-content is measured using Carbon Dating methods and reported as a percentage of carbon contained within a product that comes from biomass.
Bio-degradable:
A material that naturally decomposes over time. Whilst this reduces landfill, it can release greenhouse gasses such as CO2 and methane, contributing to global warming. Bio-degradable composites are undesirable as may degrade in use.
Compostable:
A material that decomposes in specific conditions (usually in the absence of oxygen). More sustainable as does not release greenhouse gasses.
Recyclable:
A material that can be transformed at end of life to create new materials, with a net positive economic and environmental impact.
